Maybe you have business in tantalum capacitors now or you will use this series in your project in the near future. They are a form of electrolytic capacitors and most are available as SMD chip tantalum capacitors. One of the application for SMD type of tantalum capacitors is POS (point of-sale).
 
The POS is the time and place where a retail transaction is completed. It is the point at which a customer makes a payment to the merchant in exchange for goods or after provision of a service. They are designed for restaurants, shops and other businesses that do not need to handle as many tills or as many daily transactions as a supermarket. POS accepts magnetic stripe card, smart cards and interfaces with contactless devices (cards, smart phones) through its integrated antenna.

If you want to know how to choose the right capacitor, you are on the right page,  I will give you a simple answer to this question without going into all the details.
 
There are various types of capacitors according to their designs and mechanisms. However, let us make it easier by breaking down the capacitors into two main categories: Polarized capacitors and Non-polarized capacitors.
 
The difference between a polarized capacitor and a non-polarized capacitor is that the polarized capacitor has a positive and a negative side, and generally, polarized capacitors are offen cost much less than non-polarized capacitors of the same capacitance and voltage rating.
 
Do you need a polarized capacitor? Or a non-polarized capacitor? 
If you are looking for a polarized capacitor, go for an electrolytic capacitor. There are two types of Electrolytic capacitors: Tantalum and Aluminum.
 
• Aluminum
Aluminum capacitors are cheap and common. These capacitors are available in through-hole components and surface mount types, choose the aluminum one if you don’t need it for a special purpose.
 
• Tantalum
If you need a small and durable capacitor, you should pick the tantalum type. They work in environments with a wide range of temperature. Many tantalum capacitors are available in non-polarized versions as well.
 
If your electronic device requires non-polarized capacitors, you can go for a film capacitor, a ceramic capacitor or a mica capacitor. Ceramic type is inexpensive, while the film and mica type is more reliable and tolerates high temperatures.
 
There are a few other types of capacitors as well, but the above ones are the most common.

In a way, a capacitor is a little like a battery. Although they work in completely different ways, capacitors and batteries both store electrical energy. If you have read How Batteries Work, then you know that a battery has two terminals. Inside the battery, chemical reactions produce electrons on one terminal and absorb electrons on the other terminal. A capacitor is much simpler than a battery, as it can't produce new electrons -- it only stores them.

In theory, the dielectric can be any non-conductive substance. However, for practical applications, specific materials are used that best suit the capacitor's function. Mica, ceramic, cellulose, porcelain, Mylar, Teflon and even air are some of the non-conductive materials used. The dielectric dictates what kind of capacitor it is and for what it is best suited. Depending on the size and type of dielectric, some capacitors are better for high frequency uses, while some are better for high voltage applications. Tantalum Capacitors are electrolytic capacitors that is use a material called tantalum for the electrodes. Large values of capacitance similar to aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be obtained. Also, tantalum capacitors are superior to aluminum electrolytic capacitors in temperature and frequency characteristics. When tantalum powder is baked in order to solidify it, a crack forms inside. An electric charge can be stored on this crack.

These capacitors have polarity as well. Usually, the "+" symbol is used to show the positive component lead. Do not make a mistake with the polarity on these types.

Tantalum capacitors are a little bit more expensive than aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Capacitance can change with temperature as well as frequency, and these types are very stable. Therefore, tantalum capacitors are used for circuits which demand high stability in the capacitance values. Also, it is said to be common sense to use tantalum capacitors for analog signal systems, because the current-spike noise that occurs with aluminum electrolytic capacitors does not appear. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are fine if you don't use them for circuits which need the high stability characteristics of tantalum capacitors.
