A varistor is an electronic component with a significant non-ohmic current-voltage characteristic. The name is a portmanteau of variable resistor. Resistors are the most widely used components in electronic circuits. Although very simple in concept they are key to the operation of many circuits. They can be used in a variety of ways to produce the required results.

When designing or building an electronic circuit, it may be necessary to use two or more resistors instead of one. Either the correct value of resistor may not be available, or it may be necessary to dissipate a higher power than that which a single resistor can dissipate on its own.

Ceramic capacitors are the workhorses of the capacitor world these days. Ceramic capacitors are used in millions as a result of a combination of their cost and performance. The most common form of leaded tantalum capacitors in use today are the "solid" tantalum capacitors. They offer particularly small package sizes and as a result they have been widely used in many areas of electronics.

Leaded tantalum capacitors (solid tantalum variety) are generally small and encapsulated in epoxy to prevent damage. The capacitor marking may be written directly onto the encapsulation as figures, although many used a color coding system.

Warning: - In view of the nature of these capacitors, great care should be taken not to stress these capacitors. The polarity should not be reversed, nor should they be exposed to over-voltage conditions - even spikes. If they are exposed to these conditions then they may fail, sometimes exploding.

The mica dielectric obviously forms the basis for silver mica capacitors. Its properties govern the performance of the silver mica capacitor. It was also one of the first dielectric materials to be used for capacitors in the early days or wireless because of its combination of stability and general physical and mechanical attributes.

For silver mica capacitors the silver electrodes are now plated directly on to the mica dielectric, although originally thin sheets of silver foil were placed between the mica dielectric. Again several layers are used to achieve the required capacitance. Wires for the connections are added and then the whole silver mica capacitor assembly is encapsulated to provide protection.

Electrolytic capacitors are polarised and they must be connected the correct way round, at least one of their leads will be marked + or -. They are not damaged by heat when soldering.

It is easy to find the value of electrolytic capacitors because they are clearly printed with their capacitance and voltage rating. The voltage rating can be quite low (6V for example) and it should always be checked when selecting an electrolytic capacitor. If the project parts list does not specify a voltage, choose a capacitor with a rating which is greater than the project's power supply voltage. 25V is a sensible minimum for most battery circuits.

Ceramic capacitors are suitable for moderately high-frequency work (into the high hundreds of megahertz range, or, with great care, into the low gigahertz range), as modern ceramic caps are fairly non-inductive compared to the other major classes of capacitors (film and electrolytic). Capacitor technologies with higher self-resonant frequencies tend to be expensive and esoteric (typically, mica or glass capacitors).
