A capacitor constructed by stacking, or forming into a roll, alternate layers of foil and a dielectric which consists of a plastic, such as polystyrene or Mylar, either alone or as a laminate with paper.Plastic film capacitors help suppress interference and simultaneously decouple semiconductors or are used as DC link capacitors.

They are mainly used in different instruments, DC & AC circuit of the household equipment and the fractional frequency circuit of acoustics system.

In these devices, polystyrene film is used as the dielectric. This type of capacitor is not for use in high frequency circuits, because they are constructed like a coil inside. They are used well in filter circuits or timing circuits which run at several hundred KHz or less.

The component shown on the left has a red color due to the copper leaf used for the electrode. The silver color is due to the use of aluminum foil as the electrode.

• The device on the left has a height of 10 mm, is 5 mm thick, and is rated 100pF.
• The device in the middle has a height of 10 mm, 5.7 mm thickness, and is rated 1000pF.
• The device on the right has a height of 24 mm, is 10 mm thick, and is rated 10000pF.
• These devices have no polarity.

Suntan has specially developed a new series of X2 capacitors TS08S series with metalized polypropylene films for interference suppression. These capacitors are designed for voltages of 275VAC, specified for temperatures from -40 to +100 °C, capacitance range extended from 1 nF to 2.2 µF, or customized as requested. This new X2 series provide interference suppression with CE & TUV and UL safety approvals. Their Typical applications include power supplies of all types, lamp ballasts and EMC filters.

In the case of film and foil types, the electrode is not applied as for the metallized capacitors, but is wound with the dielectric as a metal foil. Due to their lower series resistance, the components produced this way have excellent pulse and current carrying capability, as well as a very high insulation resistance

A thermocouple must be attached to the capacitor body as in:

The temperature is measured in unloaded (Tamb) and maximum loaded condition (TC).
The temperature rise is given by ΔT = TC - Tamb.
To avoid radiation or convection, the capacitor should be tested in a wind-free box.

For all capacitor technologies that do not have the ability to recover after a partial breakdown, the current flow is continuous.

However metallized film capacitors have the property to recover after an instantaneous breakdown (partial breakdown) due to the fact that the metallized electrodes (capacitor plates) act as a fuse. For fusing a small current is needed, but is not continuous. This effect is defined as “self healing” and not as breakdown.

Therefore in testing these capacitors on a proof voltage, it is always possible that the capacitors have the self healing effect, taking temporarily a peak current, but are completely isolated again after this phenomenon is stopped. To take this in account for qualifying capacitors, in all IEC standards of metallized film capacitors a breakdown is defined only when it is “permanent”.

Therefore a note is added for explanation.

Requirement: There shall be no permanent breakdown or flashover during the test.

Note: The occurrence of self-healing breakdowns during the application of the test voltages is allowed.

To detect if the behavior is a self healing or permanent breakdown, it is recommended to measure the remaining charging current only after one minute of charging and to neglect the small current peaks (arcing) before that time. Modern “high pot” test equipments have the function to allow arcing currents before the final permanent breakdown current.

This type of capacitor is a essentially a form of polyester film capacitor where the polyester films themselves are metallised. The advantage of using this process is that because their electrodes are thin, the overall capacitor can be contained within a relatively small package. The metallised polyester film capacitors are generally only available as leaded electronics components.
