Most types of capacitor include a dielectric spacer, which increases their capacitance. These dielectrics are most often insulators. However, low capacitance devices are available with a vacuum between their plates, which allows extremely high voltage operation and low losses. Variable capacitors with their plates open to the atmosphere were commonly used in radio tuning circuits. Later designs use polymer foil dielectric between the moving and stationary plates, with no significant air space between them.

In order to maximise the charge that a capacitor can hold, the dielectric material needs to have as high a permittivity as possible, while also having as high a breakdown voltage as possible.

When measured at room temperature (25°C ± 5°C) and at a frequency of 0.1 to 1 Megahertz, the minimum capacitance shall not be greater than that specified at minimum setting  with a +10% tolerance and the maximum capacitance shall not be less than that specified maximum setting with a - 10% tolerance.

The capacitance drift shall be determined as the greatest difference between any two of the three 25°C measurements obtained during the temperature characteristic test.  The capacitance drift shall not exceed 0.75% or 0.5pF, whichever is greater.

In an electrical double layer, each layer by itself is quite conductive, but the physics at the interface where the layers are effectively in contact means that no significant current can flow between the layers. However, the double layer can withstand only a low voltage, which means that electric double-layer capacitors rated for higher voltages must be made of matched series-connected individual EDLCs, much like series-connected cells in higher-voltage batteries.

EDLCs have much higher power density than batteries. Power density combines the energy density with the speed that the energy can be delivered to the load. Batteries, which are based on the movement of charge carriers in a liquid electrolyte, have relatively slow charge and discharge times. Capacitors, on the other hand, can be charged or discharged at a rate that is typically limited by current heating of the electrodes. So while existing EDLCs have energy densities that are perhaps 1/10 that of a conventional battery, their power density is generally 10 to 100 times as great.

The capacitor (C) in the circuit diagram is being charged from a supply voltage (Vs) with the current passing through a resistor (R). The voltage across the capacitor (Vc) is initially zero but it increases as the capacitor charges. The capacitor is fully charged when Vc = Vs. The charging current (I) is determined by the voltage across the resistor (Vs - Vc):

Charging current, I = (Vs - Vc) / R   (note that Vc is increasing)

At first Vc = 0V so the initial current, Io = Vs / R

Vc increases as soon as charge (Q) starts to build up (Vc = Q/C), this reduces the voltage across the resistor and therefore reduces the charging current. This means that the rate of charging becomes progressively slower.

Ceramic capacitors have become the preeminent, general purpose capacitor, especially in SMT chip devices where their low cost makes them especially attractive.  With the emergence of thinner-dielectric, multilayer units with rated voltages of less than 10 V capacitance values in the hundreds of microfarads have become available.  This intrudes on the traditional, high-capacitance province of aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Ceramic capacitors are not polarized and therefore can be used in AC applications.  The low DF and high capacitance stability of Class 1 and 2 are especially suited to AC and RF applications.
